There are several causes for driver stress or Road Rage:-
                                      1. The way YOU drive.
                                      2. YOUR attitude behind the wheel.
                                      3. YOUR lifestyle.
                                      4. YOUR work issues being taken home.
                                      5. The way YOU think. (Belief's about other's driving habits).
                                      6. The way that YOU react to others.
                                      7. YOU are in a hurry for no apparent reason.

Assuming you're still reading this and are willing to investigate further, let's take a look, feel your way around, listen to reason, about just some of the items listed above.

1. The way YOU drive. (Now stop getting defensive.)

You were taught to pass a driving TEST.
A test of your ability to cope with all manner of driving conditions.
Braking conditions, signaling and more... and you may have been taken through some of the worst traffic and worst conditions, your instructor probably looked for the worst areas for you to drive in and around road construction, stop and go traffic, allowing pedestrians to cross,etc. (depending upon your skill level).

The reason for this is not to be sadistic or just nasty, but to teach YOU how to cope with these situations when they arise. It's not necessary for YOU to go looking for them.

Let's accept that not everyone drives to the same standard. It's not my intention to dwell upon what YOU can't do, but on what you can do. If YOU honestly believe that YOU are an outstanding driver OK, then prove it. SLOW IT DOWN! BE COURTEOUS!

However, once YOU accept that YOUR attitude toward driving could improve then this is probably the best way for YOU to decrease YOUR stress level.

Consider YOUR driving worries. Are you taking stuff from work home with you?

What happens to those sensations when YOU DECIDE to turn LEFT?

So what prevents YOU from turning LEFT at that busy intersection, going with the flow of traffic, and then turning onto a side road of your choice, from the main road, and going a short distance around the block so that YOU approach that main road and turn left again on to the busy main road in the direction YOU originally wanted to go. YOU thereby avoid the stressful situation.

2. YOUR lifestyle.

If YOUR stress is caused by YOU driving to and from work then YOU may be able to reduce the level of stress by leaving home twenty or thirty minutes earlier (or what ever suits YOUR situation) so YOU feel more comfortable in any stop and go traffic hold up, see YOUR way clear to take YOUR time, and listen to the music of life around YOU.  What would happen if YOU DECIDED to change YOUR route to a less busy one.

When YOU arrive at  work YOU could feel more relaxed,
YOU could see the answers to potential problems more clearly, YOU could be more in tune with your co-workers. YOUR job takes on a whole new experience.

When You arrive at work early YOU would  have time to enjoy a beverage of your choice, to relax and unwind before YOU actually begin YOUR work.

When YOU leave work at the end of the day. YOU may picture only a long congested drive, feel tired and tense after a long day, hear a buzzing in YOUR head as YOU re-listen to what's happened through the day.
 

      YOU AND THOUSANDS MORE JUST LIKE YOU!
Getting into YOUR car and heading off to the traffic jams, whereYOU can sit for half an hour or more, and YOU become really stressed before re-joining your family. What state of mind are YOU going to be in for your family? Will you "take it out" on them? How UNFAIR!

OK so let's reframe this a little. Adjust the times to suit YOUR own situation.
YOU leave work at say 4.30pm YOU get home at 5.35pm. Of that hour and five minutes YOU may have spent twenty - thirty minutes barely moving in stop and go traffic jams.
When YOU leave work the world and every driver in it leaves work also -
PRESTO - the 'rush hour'.

So what prevents YOU FROM DECIDING to go for a walk, or for a non alcoholic beverage in a cafe, or do some shopping, for that twenty - thirty minutes that YOU would have spent inhaling the fumes of the cars around YOU.

By delaying the start of YOUR DRIVE home, YOU ALLOW the rush to clear and
YOU CAN drive in a much more relaxed environment. YOUR LUNGS will appreciate the clearer air, and YOUR FAMILY will be more pleased to see the new relaxed de-stressed YOU.
